KEEPING IT CHILL – WHY A PORTABLE FRIDGE IS THE ULTIMATE BASEMENT ADDITION

As Tiffin owners, we embrace a certain expectation of luxury, comfort, and self-reliance on the open road.  We appreciate residential-grade amenities and the convenience that comes with them.  Our coaches are designed to be beautiful homes on wheels, complete with high-end, residential-style refrigerators in the galley.  But space in the primary coach refrigerator is always at a premium during long road trips or extended boondocking sessions.  And, there is the sobering truth that residential appliances are built for stationary houses, not the rolling earthquakes of the American highway system.

We learned this lesson the hard way.  While preparing for a bucket list, trip of a lifetime to Yellowstone, our coach house refrigerator suffered a complete compressor failure – in July.  And, to make matters worse, we didn’t discover it until we were ready to leave.  Hundreds of dollars in food ruined—a frustrating and stressful reality that immediately disrupted our travels.  We had to live out of coolers packed with ice for the first five days of our trip until we were able to locate a dealer hundreds of miles away that could install a new gally fridge. Desperate for a quick fix and without doing any research, I purchased a Frigidaire 52-quart cooler from Home Depot.  It turned out to be a horrible experience, plagued with issues and ultimately subject to a product recall, forcing me to return it.  I decided right then that would not happen again.

That painful trial-and-error process taught me that when it comes to safeguarding your travel plans (and your food), cheap quick-fixes won’t cut it.  You need a dedicated, commercial-grade 12V cooler built for the road and for camping.  After some extensive research online, I narrowed my search to three brands, one of which was ICECO.  But who is ICECO?

When the cooler is tucked away in the basement, how do you know it’s working without constantly getting out to check it? The Test And The Verdict

All of this information is great but now I need to test it.  But how?  That’s right – road trip!  After getting it positioned in my basement tray, running properly and loaded with food and drinks, I set out on an 1100-mile trip down some of the worst roads I have ever been on. (This was not done on purpose!).  This trip took me over state and federal highways and included potholes so big you could easily lose a small child in along with pavement swings that certainly tested my Koni shocks to their limit.  I figured there was no way this cooler would still be working when I got there, but boy was I wrong.  The cooler never moved and had maintained the same operating temperature I had set it at before leaving.

I spent the next week putting this cooler through the paces: changing temperatures and settings up and down in both zones, opening the lids from every angle repeatedly, and turning it on and off to check compressor response in both max and eco modes.  All of the things a Class A owner would do with normal usage.  The result was flawless performance.
